Pizza Friends, hello!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you are currently getting a break from the kitchen, hanging with your family, sitting by the fire, and, well, getting a jump start on your holiday shopping. I am a notorious last-minute shopper, but this year might be different: as I type, I am sitting next to my sister who is breezing through her shopping list, encouraging me to take advantage of ALL the sales.
Today I am sharing a pizza-themed gift guide. Of course, I would be so honored if you gifted a copy of Pizza Night to the pizza maker in your life. You could pair it with any of the gift ideas listed below or gift it on its own.
Several stores including Now Serving in Los Angeles, Book Larder in Seattle, and Omnivore Books in San Francisco, have signed copies of both Pizza Night and Bread Toast Crumbs, and they ship everywhere including internationally. The Hillsdale General Store also carries signed copies along with signed copies from many other authors — they have a beautiful collection of cookbooks:
10 Pizza-Themed Gift Ideas
Kevjes Storage Containers: These have become my favorite. It’s so nice having a set of storage vessels designated for pizza dough.
R Murphy Pizza Rocker: Very sharp, very pretty. I use this mostly for pizza, but it’s surprisingly helpful for other things like cutting brownies and other bars.
Pizza Scissors: Every time I use these, people are so intrigued. Yes, you can simply use scissors to cut your pizza, but it’s fun having a dedicated pair of sheers for the job. The kids love using them, too, and I feel better about them using scissors than the rocker.
A Beautiful Board in various sizes: I have the medium, which is great for slightly large pizzas, like the thin-crust pizzas in Pizza Night, but I’m adding the small one to my Xmas list, because it would be perfect for Neapolitan-sized pizzas.
Lloyd Grandma Pan: Lloyd pans are the gold standard for pan pizzas, and they truly make a beautiful crust. I own four of the Grandma-style pans …
… and two of the Detroit-style pans, and one of each or one or the other would make a beautiful gift for the pan-pizza lover in your life.
Ooni Digital Scale: I love this dual-platform scale for its accuracy and design: it’s so nice having the screen to the side of platform, where you can actually read it as opposed to directly beneath the platform, where it will get blocked by whatever bowl or vessel is placed on it.
8. Baking Steel: the Original or Pro: I’ve said it before but the best tool you can invest in to improve your home-oven pizza crust is a Baking Steel. In short, steel is a more conductive cooking surface than stone, which means heat transfers more quickly from steel to food than it does from stone to food. This translates to both a crisper bottom and lighter, airier crust.
9. Epicurean Peel: I find this peel to be the most naturally nonstick and therefore the most user-friendly. It’s also larger than many peels, which is nice if you want to make larger pies.
10. Petra Flours: I’ve written about both of these flours several times these past few months, and I can’t say enough good things about them from their flavor to the beautifully textured crusts they create. For the pizza maker in your life who loves making pizza in their outdoor oven, a large bag of the Petra 5063 would be a treat, and for the home-oven pizza maker, the Petra 0102 would also be a treat. I have actually used both flours in both my indoor and outdoor ovens, and they perform beautifully in each, so, again, you can’t go wrong with either!
